The Cabinet of Ministers has officially approved a proposal to recruit 30000 graduates and unemployed youth into the public service. The initiative follows a recommendation made by a special committee chaired by the Secretary to the Prime Minister. Announcing the decision at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held today (April 8), Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa emphasized that the recruitment will be carried out free from political interference, based solely on existing vacancies within the public sector. Minister Jayatissa highlighted that the high unemployment rates, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing economic challenges, were key factors behind this decision. In response, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as Minister of Finance, allocated Rs. 10 billion in the 2025 National Budget to support the employment of qualified but jobless youth. The recruitment process will be overseen by the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government, ensuring transparency and adherence to merit-based selection criteria.
