Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is spreading from China to many countries; will Sri Lanka be locked down again?
Full Details
Health officials have assured that there is no need for undue fear regarding the spread of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) reported in China, clarifying that this is not a new virus but one that has been present globally for over two decades. Authorities stated that infections caused by the HMPV virus were detected in Sri Lanka during December 2022 and January 2023. However, no tests for the virus have been conducted in the country so far this year. Cases of HMPV were previously identified in the Kandy area last year, but officials emphasized that the virus is neither a cause for alarm nor a significant health threat. "There has been unnecessary fear and panic in the media, suggesting a situation similar to the Covid-19 pandemic," said a health official. "This virus has been circulating worldwide for 20 years, primarily surfacing during colder months. While Sri Lanka lacks a distinct cold season, HMPV typically emerges here in December and January. It is not a new or extraordinary issue and does not warrant excessive reporting or fear." Officials reiterated that the situation is under control and that there is no cause for public concern regarding HMPV.
